Kiss of Cinema

We kiss for love, for affection, for care, for lust, to say hello and goodbye. There’s also the whole ‘it feels so good’ thing. Sometimes we kiss our parents, our siblings, friends or even our special someone. It is a very beautiful form of expressing love. At times when we can't find words to express, gestures like kissing always comes to the rescue.

And when you stop and really think about the act of kissing, it’s kind of strange, isn’t it?  Why a kiss is never just a kiss. I always wonder what happens after the first kiss. It’s the first kiss that offers a little insight into your future relationships maybe, I'm thinking too much isn't it?

We all know how we react to the dynamics of a love centric film. And what better example that Titanic? It talks of a love that is passionate, permanent, soul stirring, death defying and powerful enough to break all barriers of class and destiny. You know what’s coming up next on screen. But rest assured, you still won’t mind seeing the Titanic sink all over again... exactly a hundred years from the moment it actually happened. Rose and Jack's first kiss is the highlight of the film as it goes beyond being a mere romantic gesture to a symbolic one.  It symbolizes the lady's decision to break free from her barriers and thus confirm the mutual affection that they felt for each other. And just like that, "Titanic" arrives at its destination in our hearts forever.

Although I am not a big fan of  "Muppozhudhum Un Karpanaigal",  Kangal Neeye is definitely a show stealer. Thamarai ma'am's lyrics describes a baby, a son to be precise from the eyes of the mother. Everyday I see it in my own mother’s eyes. Being an Amma's boy,  not only is this song relatable but also irreplaceable just like the bond. Being a mother herself, Thamarai pulls at all the strings in your heart with lines like

“Palanaal kanavae, oru naal nenavae, yaekangal theerthaaiyae…ennaiyae pizhintha unnai naan eduthaen, naanthaan nee vaerillai!”.

Boy meets Girl and falls in love. In short this is every cliche'd tamil film's love story. VTV however stood different in that sector. Although some scenes weren't justified, VTV helped raise the bar of Tamil romantic films. I admire the way Karthik feels for Jessie after he kissed her and how their chemistry starts brewing post their cafe meet-up. Although, things don't work out to their benefit, their romance was still a memorable one.

"Oru fantastic ana chemistry iruku namakulla.. adha ne realise panniyea.."

Forehead kisses show the trust and comfort two people cherish amongst themselves. And rubbing nose, It is fun, romantic and absolutely cute. Couples do the Eskimo kiss when they are sharing a light moment or just to tell how much they love being with each other. This all awesome isn't it?  I have always admired Mani Sir's films for being able to bring this magic on to the screen.

It is either the cinematography or the story or the acting that makes me live the fictional  romance of the characters. Kannathil Muthamittal, Alaipayuthey, Ravanan, Nayagan, Ok Kanmani and Kaatru veliyidai  have been testament to this very fact. His movies reflect inter-personal conflicts through their characters and often even through objects like mirrors and rain. In this process, they teach us the essence of love and life.

We all can agree that a kiss from the right person can make us forget all of our miseries for that moment and lighten up our hearts and films often help us relive this moment through their characters. To end with, I'd like to quote a few lines from Walt Whitman Poem's about kiss -

"Dear girl — through me the ancient privilege too,
For the New World, through me, the old, old wedding greeting:
O youth and health! O sweet Missouri rose! O bonny bride!
Yield thy red cheeks, thy lips, to-day,
Unto a Nation's loving kiss."
