Our Favorite South Indian Romances to watch with your Loved Ones

A lot of us absolutely despise films for setting unrealistic standards when it comes to their portrayal of love. But some gems like 96, O Kadhal Kanmani, Premam, etc talk about this sacred emotion and invoke a fuzzy feeling in you, without making it seem too out of reach. We have curated a list of a few such light-hearted romantic films that’ll surely leave you thankful for your loved ones and help bring a smile on your face even on the gloomiest of days.

C/o Kancharapalem (2018) - Netflix

If you enjoyed watching the recent anthology by the name of Sillu Karrupati, then you most definitely will enjoy watching this beautiful film about four love stories across age, religion, and status that takes place in the little town of Kancharapalem. From a school boy’s innocent attraction to his classmate to a middle-aged officer’s feelings towards her assistant, these stories are sure to warm your heart while explaining how universal the concept of love is.

Thattathin Marayathu (2012) - Sun Nxt

If poetry is for you, have you ever tried watching Aisha and Vinod's love story? Thattathin Marayathu is a musical delight that you must watch whether you are a hopeless romantic or not. There is a dialogue in the film where the hero describes Aisha’s immortal beauty as she moves from the dark to the light in the empty college corridor and... Ende Saare! With this film, one can’t help but fall in love with falling in love.

Oohalu Gusagusalade (2014) - Hotstar

Although this film could pass off as a cliche to many, I think it’s a very neatly done rom-com! This story is about an aspiring newsreader who has to help his boss woo the girl he likes, in return for his dream job. it’s quirky, cute and will leave you with at least two moments of aww through the film.

Katheyondu Shuruvaagide (2018) - Amazon Prime

This movie sure deserves a place in this list for it’s a simple yet progressive take on modern love. Tarun is the owner of a struggling resort who finds it hard to keep business going. Things take an exciting turn as Tanya, a fun young woman comes to stay at his place and starts bringing in hope to Tarun’s life. This is accompanied by two other romantic sidetracks. One of the assisting staff and the other, Tarun’s aunt and uncle. This film is a complete package of cuteness and warmth accompanied by the stunning visuals shot in Pondicherry and Karwar!

Chi La Sow (2018) - Sun NXt

Although this movie might begin a little slowly, it picks up pace really quick. Addressing the very real Indian issue of the pressure once you reach a “marriageable age”, Chi La Sow is the story of two strangers who meet on a blind date set up by their parents. Even though the protagonist is against getting married, he starts to fall in love with the girl until a series of incidents leads him to question his choices.

Mundina Nildana (2019)

The thing about an urban love story is that it makes it relatable for a majority of the audiences. This film about three characters and how their paths cross, makes them question and introspect everything about their life and being. Positioned for the millennial mindset, the film is a journey to the next destination in one’s life. The beautiful visuals, however, steals the show. It makes you feel like a part of the journey and leaves you with an aftertaste to cherish.

Pelli Choopulu (2016) - mxplayer

What comes to your mind when I say Food? Does it get better when I say, love? But what if I put both these words together? Prashanth and Chitra’s Matchmaking takes an interesting turn as they decide to become business partners and open their own food truck joint. Although carefree Prashanth and ambitious Chitra start this food truck for their own selfish deeds, it ends up being much more to them! Of dreams, love and plentiful food, watch this film for a stunning experience.

Kadhalum Kadanthu Pogum (2016) - Prime Video

Ka Ka Po is a realistic love tale about the attraction between an ex-convict and an IT professional who live as neighbors and how they try to keep this romance alive despite their individual lives. What makes this film convincing is the impeccable performance by the lead actors making this light-hearted funny tale, something that you’d like to take with you!

Ondu Motteya Kathe  (2017) - Netflix

A compelling love story, Ondu Motteya Kathe came as a relief amidst all the love castles being built on the air. A more realistic take on love, this story is about Janardhan, a simpleton who has to get married within a year due to his astrologer’s prediction of a disastrous future. But there’s one small issue. Janardhan has started balding already. This interesting take on a young bachelor, struggling to find love amidst all the stereotypes and drama,  is sure to leave you smiling and satisfied till the end!

Salt n Pepper (2011) - Sun Nxt

A foodie and a voice actor fall in love with each other over a wrong phone call.  But there’s a small problem. They’ve never met each other and they are much older than they portray themselves to be! Maybe this romance was all that they needed to bring in the childlike excitement and innocence back into their lives. Of Thattil Kutti dosa, rainbow cakes, and roasted chicken,  Salt N Pepper is a delicious romantic tale that’s easy to digest.

Andala Raksashi (2012) - Amazon Prime

This movie released relatively earlier and yet doesn’t seem to have outdated itself. Andala Raksashi is a picturesque film about a wealthy man who falls in love with a girl only to know that she loves another man. This typical love triangle, however, takes an interesting turn when a set of events changes their lives forever.

Nila (2015) - Netflix

It’s very possible that you have missed noticing this movie lying in a tiny corner of your Netflix account. But this visually beautiful film hides in it a simple yet touching tale of romance that’s sure to win your heart! Nila is a film about childhood sweethearts who meet years later in a dreamy scenario. Will they decide to continue their independent journeys or will they let their unexplored desires take over their pure emotion for each other? Well, you’ll have to watch it the movie to find out!

100 days of love (2015) - Sun Nxt.

Now, this isn’t really a popular film amongst the masses and I might just receive a little hatred for including it in the list. But call it my foolish belief in mindless romance or just the on-screen chemistry of this wonderful pair of actors, 100 days of love will forever be one of my favourite films. A columnist, Balan falls in love with his childhood friend Sheela, only to realize that she is engaged to someone else. Ohh but it doesn't end there! If you enjoy vintage romance, this might just be your film.
