How beautiful is it when the monsoons arrive? Starting from the days where we sit tirelessly in front of the TV at 7 a.m. anticipating a holiday, half-dressed for school with the smell of pakodas lingering around the house. It feels like you are standing in the middle of a concert ground where nature is effortlessly performing its best piece yet. Absolute bliss!
What if we can recreate the same bliss with films? What if we can create our own rain with movies? Here I come up with a list of movies which evoke the bliss that rain gives us with each of its stages.
I’m pretty sure you must have heard the sentence ‘Escape from Reality’. But how many of you have realized that it’s a part of your life? Every time the clouds adorn their most beautiful grey form, these words take life. It pours the invisible grey paint in the atmosphere and creates a soothing and healing environment.
Peanut Butter Falcon (2019)
Peanut Butter Falcon is one movie that gives you that shade of rain. The plot of a young fat boy with Down syndrome wanting to achieve his dream of becoming a professional wrestler makes our heart fill with pleasure which heals all the negativity running inside.
The Perks Of Being A Wallflower (2012)
The Perks of Being a Wallflower makes you look at this world in its present state, not allowing the past to pop in. The films, especially these dialogues act as the fuel accelerating rain every time in your heart when you listen to it.
"And I know all these things will be stories someday, and our pictures will become old photographs, and we’ll all become somebody’s mom or dad. But right now these moments are not stories, I’m here, and I’m looking at her. And she is so beautiful."
2. The Aroma Of Petrichor
It just enters into your soul without it's permission but you don't want it to leave! The aroma of rain. It can give you an involuntary high which just makes that moment so magical.
Sillu Karupatti (2019)
Life eventually will show you it's best phase and give you some wonderful stories to tell. The art of storytelling can thus introduce you to some beautiful perspectives in life. Sillu Karupatti makes you live that life through it's characters, letting you get high in it's sweet aroma.
3. Mild Drizzle
Maheshinte Prathikaaram (2016)
This is the point where the actual process takes its life. You’ll start seeing the small silvery droplets hit the the surface of your hand. Maheshinte Prathikaaram is a movie with a lot of life in it which can reinforce that in our existence.
A photographer trying to be get better at his art by looking at life around him through his lens, makes you feel the essence of that very life. Since the plot takes place in Idukki, the movie gives us a much needed refreshing chill.
4. Heavy Drizzle
When nature crosses this threshold of being a gentle droplet, you see the payoff of the process. As the heavier droplets hit your face, a kind of liberation arises in your heart. You look at the infinite which is above your existence. Highway is one such film that gives you this liberating feeling through the outbreak of its character, Veera.
The form of freedom which the water drop (Veera) experiences when it’s being released from the grey shaded clouds (family), wipes and clears everything down on Earth (life) in a subtle way.
Kumbalangi Nights (2019)
The moment of payoff! The lullaby from heaven, the beats with no given tempo of the tiny silvery drops. At this time what we essentially need is a car, a long drive on an empty road with Cherathukal playing in the background!
Makane Njanundarikathoru Kanakannottamaay
A story of siblings who live on the riverside bringing out the complex emotional difference from each other yet showing their support as a result of some series of events, makes our heart realise the beauty of the world we live in.
The climate slowly starts to show its vigorous and pathetic side. Emotions are pouring with tragic events and moments. Clouds yell at its utmost telling you not to come out. But still, your heart wants to drain in the melancholy of something.
Rockstar is a story about the life of a musician who leads his life in a really chaotic situation. With the anger and the emotional outbreak of that character, the drama progresses as the sky yells during the rain.
Iraivi is a movie that affects every male control freak to a large extent. With the female characters desire to go out in the rain being shown as something that needs permission, the storytelling treats rain as a representation of freedom. It really hits hard for the male ego and creates a feeling of liberation.
The most destructive phase. The lullaby of this silvery substance in the initial stage turns to be the sad symphony of tears everywhere. Ee.Ma.Yau is the film that tells the truth straight to your face and is hard to digest. Every calendar has its own judgment day. It may come like a flood and take your life. Ee.Maa.Yau is a film that won’t fail to evoke this discomfort.
